Head of Civil Protection Board of the Fire and Rescue Department under Ministry of Interior (LITHUANIA)
Edgaras Geda is the Head of Civil Protection Board of the Fire and Rescue Department under Ministry of Interior. He took up this post in late 2016. From 2012-2015, he worked as Civil Protection Attaché at the Permanent delegation of the Republic of Lithuania to NATO. In this position he was primarily responsible for representation of national interests to international organizations (NATO, EU, UN and etc.) in the field of civil protection. From 2000 to 2012 he served at different positions in the Fire and Rescue Department under Ministry of Interior, main responsibilities were related to fire safety regulatory functions and industrial accident prevention. From February 1997 he started professional carrier as a firefighter. Edgaras has Doctors of Technological Science Degree, his scientific interest area is fire engineering and structural behavior in fire. Married, has one kid. He speaks English, Polish and Russian.

The Government of the Republic of Lithuania has the overall political responsibility for civil protection in Lithuania. Ministries and other state institutions and agencies within the sphere of their competence are responsible for the organisation of civil protection, preparedness and response in the event of an emergency. The Fire and Rescue Department is the institution which, within the sphere of its competence, directs the activities of the civil protection system, co-ordinates the organisation of emergency prevention, the activities of residents, state and municipal institutions, agencies and economic entities and plans the national preparedness for the implementation of civil protection tasks in the event of an emergency. The presentation will give an overview of existing procedures and tools used in Lithuania for management of emergencies at state and municipality level, emphasizing value of modern technologies that they bring in saving lives and wealth in case of emergencies.
